Thomas Richard – Principal Accuform Technologies LLC

Tom Richard obtained a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978. Immediately upon leaving MIT, he began his career at Monsanto Agricultural Products Company, and rapidly rose to the position of senior research group leader. Dr. Richard's group was responsible for glyphosate® process development, and his group and he developed the “high payload” oxidative process still used for the production of glyphosate® worldwide. Tom won two Monsanto “Process Achievement Awards” for the conduct of this research. In 1986, Dr. Richard left Monsanto to pursue the field of perfluorocarbon (PFC) based biological oxygen transport agents (“blood substitutes”). Dr. Richard is the co-inventor of Oxyfluor, a PFC emulsion that has been infused in patients in two stages of clinical trials (Europe and US), without significant adverse events. With Dr. Robert F. Shaw, Dr. Richard documented the results of this work in Chapter 27, “Oxyfluor™” of the book “Blood Substitutes” (Elsevier, 2006, ed. Robert M. Winslow).

In 1996, Covance Laboratories, in Madison, Wisconsin, recruited Dr. Richard to assist in the development of an early drug development team. Subsequent to the establishment of that team, Dr. Richard returned to St. Louis as Director of Chemical Research at Chemir Laboratories. At Chemir, Dr. Richard firmly established a GLP laboratory, and grew the pharmaceutical contract business to represent a significant portion of Chemir’s revenue.

Encouraged by Dr. Shri Thanedar, the owner of Chemir Laboratories, Dr. Richard began his own consulting firm, Chemvantage Consultants, LLC, in 2001. This business takes advantage of Dr. Richard’s 28 years of experience in directing Agricultural and Pharmaceutical small molecule synthesis, process development, and deformulation to provide his clients targeted programs for efficient product development.
